It would be nice to think that you will never have to experience using CPR and a defibrillator, but the reality is different and one which cannot be ignored any longer.

Latest stats show that there are around 270 deaths in schools each year, 80% of those disn't know they had a pre existing condition!

To get involved you simply need to nominate your school and explain in 400 words or less why you think your school should have a defibrillator.

Maybe you have been unfortunate and had a Sudden Cardiac Arrest at your school already, or perhaps a child at your school has a pre-existing congenital heart problem.

The chances are you haven't had a cardiac arrest or you don't know if one of the pupils at your school has a pre-existing congenital heart problem. That means that you, like the rest of us, don't know when you may need a defibrillator and it's that unknown which makes defibrillators so important.

For every minute that someone is in cardiac arrest their chance of survival drops by about 10%.

If you have to wait for an ambulance it maybe too late whereas if you have a defibrillator, and are able to use it, the victim's chance of survival leaps to a staggering 74% chance of survival.

That is certainly money and time well invested.

You'll never buy another item at your school which could have such a positive impact on a student's life.

Funding

The Heartstart Schools Defibrillator Package is valued £1730 (not including postage) in total and if you are successful in your grant application you will receive an award of £250-1000 towards this cost.  The remaining amount is to be raised by fundraising activities at your school or by fundraisers wishing to donate specifically to your school.
